HomeNewsInvestigativeNeighborhoodsStatePoliticsU.S. Published: Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, 11:39 p.m. Buddhist monks in wool robes of gold and burgundy rang bells, shook hand drums and chanted prayers in Tibetan as they prepared to make a sand painting symbolizing compassion and the temporary nature of life. Two monks with shaved heads sat around a 3-foot-square table on Sunday in the Spinning Plate Gallery in East Liberty and meticulously poured colored sand into a circular drawing offering a bird's eye view of a mandala — a symbol for the universe. The monks were so careful, they donned surgical masks so their breaths would not disturb a grain of sand. “It's aspiring (to be) a spiritual experience, compassion, so hopefully, anybody who comes and witnesses it will have a spiritual experience, whereby they share that compassion with others,” said Mark Oliver, president of the board of directors of the Three Rivers Tibetan Cultural Center in Oakland, sponsor of the ceremony. The monks will continue working on the sand painting all week. “When's it's complete, it's incredible to look at,” said John Bogaard, 56, of Braddock, one of 33 people who witnessed the ceremony. “It gives you that wow factor. This marks the first time that Bogaard, a senior student with the cultural center, witnessed the hour-long opening of a mandala ceremony. It's the first one held by this center. Buddhism is estimated to have 350 million followers around the world, making it the fourth-largest religion. About 1.2 million Buddhists live in the United States, according to the Census Bureau. The cultural center, one of about 20 Buddhist groups in Allegheny County, has about 30 regular visitors. The central tenet of the Buddhist path is living one's path honestly, ethically and with moderation and awareness of the needs of others. Incense burned as the monks — Khempo Choephel of the cultural center and Lama Konchok Sonam of Boston — waved their hands and chanted prayers to purify the space from negative energy. The monks spent days tracing the mandala. The ceremony entailed the painting of the inner circle — the Tibetan syllable “hri” representing compassion — on lotus leaves. Each monk dipped a long cone into containers with at least 10 colors of sand and painstakingly dribbled the grains inside the outline by rubbing a metal stick over the grooves of the cone. If a grain landed outside the proper color, the monk carefully swept it back. Jonnie Viakley, 63, a Buddhist from Oakmont, witnessed the ceremony with her friend, Laura Smith of Highland Park, who is not a Buddhist. Viakley called the practice of mandala from Tibet profound. “That we're able to share in that practice is a real gift,” she said. “I thought the intentions behind it were very beautiful,” Smith said. “It'll be a nice way for me to get into my yoga tonight. Bogaard said the monks, who worked so carefully over the sand painting, will sweep it up at 11 a.m. Saturday, take it to The Point in a procession and pour it into the Ohio River. “It's a demonstration of impermanence,” he said.
